One of the most common questions we get asked here on this blog is just how quickly can I obtain my forklift certification?

And this is a valid question because it can and will have an impact on when and where you will go through with the certification process.

Basically all Forklift training courses will have a different recommended duration depending on the training provider and their specific course structure. However on average the course will go for no less than 4 hours and no longer than 3 days.

No matter how long the course duration you sign up for however, you will be required to demonstrate that you have the requisite knowledge and practical skill base to safely operate a forklift truck. Most experienced truck drivers will find the two day course more than necessary however it will make obtaining certification that much easier.

Longer forklift training and certification courses are available however for those who have never even driven a car or conducted any pre course study. These course generally span a whole week or series of weekends and deliver absolutely everything on the topic of forklifts and their operations.

The forklift training requirements in the state of Arkansas are very similar to the requirements across the other states. Your employer will require you to undergo forklift training and certification before allowing you to operate any sort of lifting machinery. This is so they can claim compliance with OSHA’s workplace safety regulations.

There are a number of different ways to go about getting your forklift training in Arkansas, the two most common being undertaking a certified training course at your place of employment conducted by your employer. Or secondly being paid by your employer to attend a training course conducted by a third party external organisation.

Arkansas Forklift Training Requirements

In order to attend a forklift training session and obtain a formal certification in the state of Arkansas you must meet each of the following minimum requirements

- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be a United States registered citizen or valid legal alien
- Completion of your high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Hold a valid drivers licence
- Demonstrate sound mental competency
- No disability that would prevent performance of duty
- Meet a minimum eye sight test

Arkansas Forklift Training Course Specifics

If you meet all of the requirements above and have yet to become forklift certified your employer will require you to attend a training seminar either at your place of employment or at an external site provided by a certified forklift training school.

A forklift training course will consist of both a practical and theoretical component. And once complete you will be required to pass both a written and practical test.

The major elements of theory covered in the forklift training are as follows.

- OH&S regulatory overview
- Forklift safety and pre use inspection
- Safe parking, operation and transport of goods

Forklift related accidents and deaths have been on the rise over the past five years. In response to this the OSHA has released a set of requirements that mandate that employers ensure their forklift operators uphold a minimum standard of training whilst operating lift trucks within the workplace.

While forklift training is not specifically required by law, most employers in the state of Arizona will require you to undertake it before they offer you a job. This is to specifically protect themselves against the industry regulations that have been implemented by the OSHA and other industry bodies.

Arizona Forklift Training Requirements

The minimum requirements for forklift training differ little from state to state, it is just the specific training curriculum that will differ slightly between training schools. That said, the minimum requirements you will need to be able to demonstrate in order to begin your forklift training in the state of Arizona are as follows.

- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be a United States registered citizen or valid legal alien
- Completion of your high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Hold a valid drivers licence
- Demonstrate sound mental competency
- No disability that would prevent performance of duty
- Meet a minimum eye sight test

Arizona Forklift Training Course

The specific training that you will receive will depend on the employer that has given you a job and the specific external organization they hire to conduct their training. As a general guideline most courses will include modules outlining the following aspects.

- Lift truck safety theory
- Safe traveling and understanding of traffic controls
- The forklift operating environment
- Effective and safe transport of loads
- Forklift types and attachment training
- Parking theory
- Fuel types and efficient recharge
- Regulatory overview

As well as a theoretical underpinning, forklift training also requires the participant undertake a practical training component. This will instruct and test the forklift operator on a number of fundamental driving and lifting techniques. In order to pass the training you will be required to pass a written exam and a practical test.

Online Forklift Training

For those of you who are interested in whether you can complete your forklift training online. There are a number of providers who offer on demand forklift training courses. If you undertake this route, make sure that your provider is OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.178 certified – if not your credential received will be invalid. People who complete their training online will need to complete the practical component once they’ve started in the workplace.

However aside from this time constraint on the life of the certification, there are also a number of secondary causes which may trigger the requirement for you to refresh your forklift certification.

Refresher training must be undertaking if any of the following circumstances are breached.

The forklift driver has been seen to be operating the vehicle in an unsafe manner

The forklift operator has been in an accident or a near miss of an accident

A periodic examination of the driver shows that they no longer have the skill to operate a forklift

The forklift operator is required to operate a new class of forklift

Something in the workplace is altered which could impact on the safe operation of the forklift

It is the onus of both the employee and the employer to ensure that certification is refreshed if any of the above articles are breached including the three year tie limit.

Once both the theoretical and practical examinations contained within the forklift training module have been completed and passed by the trainee they will be classified as OSHA certified. This essentially means that the trainee has demonstrated that they have the knowledge and ability to operate a forklift in a safe manner within the work environment.

Once the certification and training process has been completed formal documentation must be maintained on the employers records. This official documentation must include the name of the forklift operator, the date of both the theoretical and practical training, the date of physical evaluation, as well as the identity and credentials of the person who carried out the training. This certificate will be emblazoned with your company logo and must be signed by both the operator and employer to be valid. The certification will remain valid for three years.

The second requirement is for operators to undergo practical forklift operation training. These two requirements are generally carried out over a 4 phase cycle.

Phase 1 – Theoretical Forklift Training

During the initial phase the forklift trainer will guide trainees through a thorough and interactive review of the fundamental underpinnings of operating the machinery. Topics that will generally be covered include:

OSHA regulations and requirements

Discussion of the different types of forklifts

Overview of the operation of forklifts

Forklift safety

Forklift maintenance

Phase 2 – Theoretical Forklift Training Evaluation

After the initial phase has been completed, an short examination will be administered to test the employees knowledge of the principles covered. The exact requirements of each test will be different according to which external organization has been brought in to conduct the training. Generally the test will consist of a short multiple choice section, with an essay style written component as well. All tests are graded and generally a minimum score of 70% will be required to pass this phase of the training.

Phase 3 – Practical Forklift Training

Once through the theoretical training and testing the trainee will move onto the hand on portion of the program in which operators are shown how to carry out a pre use inspection, safe operating procedures, start up / shut down procedures, parking operations and then operators are given the opportunity to practice under the watchful eye of an experienced trainer.

Phase 4 – Practical Forklift Training

After the practical training process all trainees will be assessed on their ability to have reached a minimum skill level in using a counter balanced forklift over a relatively challenging practice course. Following the practical evaluation so long as the minimum standards were reached trainees will be de-briefed and given a chance to address any issues they may have. Official documentation will be sent to the employer and the operator will become forklift certified for a period of three years.
